We all know about Baja bugs - but the 96 was another popular vehicle in the early days of the race.
The original cars entered by SAAB were not much different than stock cars. A skid plate, some big tires, lights, reinforced suspension. The next time around the exhaust was routed over the roof and the shock absorbers were doubled up.
Before the vehicles started getting really crazy, these 96s did really well, coming in 3rd in 1969 and 5th in 1970.
Later cars were modded more heavily with even larger wheels and tires, and cut away fenders to clear them. I love the spun aluminum wheels on this particular example from the 80s. The original SAAB transmissions were apparently not up to this sort of abuse and a swap for a Subaru unit seems to have been an option.
I think I might put some spun wheels and knobby tires on mine - I’d have to forgo the roof mounted exhaust though.

Hey Berang, I ran across this post while tracing the top photo from the Facebook Saab V4 group. Just wondering where you may have gotten these images and if there is any more info about them!
Press on. Tyler

Just through a google image search.
I do however have an article about the Baja winning SAAB 96 in an old issue of Hot Vws that goes into a little detail about the modifications to the car. I’ll have to dig it out and re-read it.
